Overview
The UC Irvine Health Robotic Oncology Center offers the latest robot-assisted surgical techniques to treat cancer. It is one of only a few multidisciplinary robotic oncology centers in the United States and the first of its kind in Orange County. The center's surgeons are world leaders in performing robot-assisted surgery to treat various types of cancers at UC Irvine Medical Center, Orange County's only university hospital.
In 2002, our surgeons became the first in Southern California to perform prostate surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System®. In addition to being a national leader in performing robotic prostatectomies, UC Irvine Health also offers robot-assisted surgery for kidney, ureteral, gynecologic, colorectal, gastrointestinal and thyroid cancers. The center is expanding its services to include robot-assisted surgery for lung, stomach and other cancers. Each procedure is performed by a highly skilled team of surgeons, nurses and technicians who specialize in using the da Vinci system.
Robotic technology gives surgeons added dexterity and range of motion. With three-dimensional imaging and precision-guided movements, the robot-assisted system allows surgeons to make the same small incisions as conventional laparoscopy, but with greater accuracy. Like laparoscopy, robot-assisted surgery offers tremendous benefits to patients over conventional open surgery, including:
